# Segments

A segment is an audience of subscribers for one app and one environment. The segments page lists that audience and how many subscribers match right now.

## How it works

Opening segments shows six automatic audiences, then any custom segments saved for the app's active environment. The query column shows the conditions as one line. When that line does not fit, the rest collapse to “+N queries”, and hovering it shows every condition. Development and production are separate. A subscriber in the other environment is not counted, and a soft-deleted subscriber is not counted. A person who is not a member of the workspace receives 404. A viewer can open the list and preview a count. A developer, admin, or owner can create, edit, and delete a custom segment.

Automatic audiences are the same for every app:

- Active users: last seen within 7 days. A subscriber last seen exactly 7 days ago is included.
- Inactive 7 days: last seen more than 7 days ago.
- New users: first seen within 7 days.
- iOS users.
- Android users.
- Push enabled: notification permission is granted.

A custom segment has a name and at least one condition. The first condition reads “if”, and each condition after it reads “and if”. Every condition must match. The name is unique for that app and environment. The same name can exist in the other environment.

The builder covers the subscriber record used to define an audience: identity, platform, SDK, push permission, notifications, status, device, location, activity dates, any attribute, tags, and an event name. Activity dates are last seen, first seen, created, and last notification. A date condition is a number of days, from 1 to 365. Text can equal, contain, differ, be set, or be empty. An attribute key is a name or a dotted path, such as `plan.trial`. A tag is any label the app stores, such as `free_trial`. An event condition is the name that subscriber recorded at least once, such as `trial_started`, `notification_opened`, or `notification_clicked`. SDK equals or is not one of Expo, React Native, Flutter, Swift, Kotlin, or Web. Country equals or is not an ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code, chosen from the country list and stored in uppercase. The raw push token is not a condition.

Add new segment opens a modal. The matching count updates from the subscribers in the active environment while the conditions change. The row opens a panel. The panel recaps the matching count and the conditions, and Send notification and Use in automation sit at the bottom right. Each row has Edit. Delete is the red button and fades in beside Edit when that row is hovered. Edit stays in place. Edit on a custom segment opens the form to change the name and conditions. Edit on an automatic audience opens the recap. Delete asks for confirmation, then removes that audience from this environment. Selecting rows and choosing Delete does the same for several at once. An automatic audience stays gone for that environment. A custom segment is deleted. Subscribers stay. A viewer cannot delete. Send notification opens the composer with that segment selected. Use in automation opens the automations page with that segment selected.
